WhistlePig The Boss Hog I Spice Dancer — First Edition. WhistlePig Farm, Shoreham, Vermont — the inaugural release of WhistlePig's Boss Hog series: 24 barrels only, 100% single grain straight rye at pure barrel strength, the founding statement of WhistlePig's most prestigious annual program and the first Boss Hog ever produced — a whiskey for collectors and connoisseurs that launched one of the most celebrated limited release series in American rye history.

When WhistlePig released the first Boss Hog, the American rye whiskey revival was still in its early stages. WhistlePig's standard 10 Year had already earned critical acclaim — perfect scores and top competition placements — but there had never been a WhistlePig expression at pure barrel strength from a single grain selection of only 24 of the oldest and most unique barrels. Spice Dancer was the proof of concept for the entire Boss Hog program: that WhistlePig's aged rye, uncut and undiluted, at barrel strength above 130 proof, remained savory and palatable rather than overwhelming — a remarkable achievement that the brand cited explicitly at release.

Every Boss Hog edition that followed — from Spirit of Mortimer through Lapulapu's Pacific, from Armagnac finishes to Japanese koji fermentation — traces its origin to Spice Dancer. Owning the First Edition is owning the founding document of a series that won Best In Show Whiskey at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and became one of the most collected American rye programs of the last two decades.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: A balanced, creamy vanilla against a fruity sweetness, thickly seasoned with sarsaparilla and tinged with musty wood. The 100% single grain, barrel strength character is assertive but not harsh.
  • Palate: An instant rush of honey with touches of cinnamon and cloves, delivering sultry hits of vanilla and oak. The barrel strength amplifies the 100% rye grain's natural sweetness alongside its spice.
  • Finish: Subtle heat of red pepper and cinnamon with the smooth feel of dark chocolate. A finish that demonstrates WhistlePig's original claim: palatable even at full barrel strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes the First Edition Boss Hog historically significant? It is the founding release of the Boss Hog series — the program that would go on to produce the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition Best In Show Whiskey (Boss Hog IV: The Black Prince) and become one of the most collected annual American rye programs. Spice Dancer is where it all began.
  • Why only 24 barrels? WhistlePig selected only the oldest and most unique barrels from their aging inventory — the most exceptional 24 casks they could identify. The extreme scarcity was deliberate: a founding statement that the Boss Hog program would operate at the outer limit of what was available, not as a volume exercise.
  • How does this compare to later Boss Hog editions? Later editions explored exotic finishing casks (Calvados, Armagnac, Umeshu, Philippine rum, South American teak). Spice Dancer is pure — no finishing cask, pure barrel strength single grain rye from 24 barrels. The purest statement of WhistlePig's own rye character in the Boss Hog series.
