Bacardí Superior White Rum. Casa Bacardí, Cataño, Puerto Rico — the original mixable rum, invented in 1862 by Don Facundo Bacardí Massó in Santiago, Cuba, and the spirit that single-handedly created the modern light rum category through a proprietary charcoal filtration process still used today.

Don Facundo Bacardí Massó arrived in Cuba from Spain in 1830 and spent the next three decades obsessing over rum. At the time, rum was a crude, harsh spirit — the drink of sailors and laborers. Don Facundo changed that in 1862 when he introduced two innovations that redefined the category. First, he pioneered a parallel distillation method: two distinct spirits are distilled simultaneously — an aguardiente at 150–160 proof for body, and a redistillado at 185–190 proof for lightness — then blended before aging. Second, he developed a proprietary charcoal filtration process that passed the spirit through thirteen different types of charcoal in multiple stages, both before and after aging, stripping color and harsh congeners while preserving delicate flavor compounds. The result was the world's first truly mixable rum.

Today Bacardi Superior is produced at Casa Bacardi in Cataño, Puerto Rico — the largest rum distillery in the world, sitting across the bay from Old San Juan. The rum is aged one to two years in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before double-charcoal filtration for clarity. The result is a crystal-clear rum that retains just enough barrel character for depth without weight. 91 points from Tastings.com. Monde Selection Gold Medal. The Mojito, Daiquiri, and Cuba Libre were all popularized using Bacardi Superior as the base.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Light and aromatically balanced with soft floral and fruity top notes. Subtle almond and a whisper of fresh lime follow, keeping the nose clean and inviting.
  • Palate: Soft and slightly sweet on entry, with almond and gentle vanilla arriving at mid-palate. Light tropical fruit and clean grain character. Dry and precise throughout.
  • Finish: Dry, crisp, and clean. Short to medium length with a hint of ginger and coriander that fades quickly. Designed to disappear cleanly in a cocktail.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Bacardi Superior taste like? Light, clean, and slightly sweet with almond, gentle vanilla, and a whisper of lime. The palate is soft with light tropical fruit and grain character. The finish is dry and crisp with faint ginger and coriander. Designed to blend seamlessly into cocktails without dominating.
  • What makes Bacardi Superior different from other white rums? The double charcoal filtration process — 13 types of charcoal in multiple stages before and after aging — strips color and harsh congeners while preserving delicate flavor compounds. Combined with the parallel distillation method blending two distinct spirits, it produces a cleaner, drier profile than most competitors.
  • Is Bacardi Superior good for cocktails? It was literally invented for cocktails — the first rum designed to blend seamlessly into mixed drinks rather than dominate them. The Mojito, Daiquiri, Cuba Libre, Piña Colada, and Rum Punch are all classics built around Bacardi Superior.
  • Where is Bacardi made? At Casa Bacardi in Cataño, Puerto Rico — the largest rum distillery in the world, across the bay from Old San Juan. The brand originated in Santiago, Cuba in 1862 before relocating operations in the mid-twentieth century.
  • Why is Bacardi called "Superior"? The name dates to 1862 when Don Facundo used it to distinguish his refined, filtered rum from the rough aguardiente of the era. It was a statement of quality — a superior rum for a superior era of drinking.
