Tuaca is an Italian vanilla-citrus brandy liqueur produced in Livorno, Tuscany — a sweet, smooth spirit made from Italian brandy infused with natural vanilla, citrus, and spices at 35% ABV. Originally produced in Italy with roots tracing to 15th-century Renaissance Florence, Tuaca was imported to the United States by Sazerac and became a popular cocktail ingredient and shot spirit in the 1990s and 2000s.
The flavor profile is distinctive and approachable: vanilla is the dominant note, balanced by citrus brightness and subtle warming spices. The Italian brandy base adds a fruity, slightly grape-derived warmth beneath the flavoring that distinguishes it from neutral-spirit-based vanilla liqueurs. Tuaca works well as a shot (smooth and sweet at 35% ABV), in warm cocktails like the Hot Apple Pie (Tuaca + hot apple cider + whipped cream), in Espresso Martini variations, and as a vanilla-citrus modifier in cocktails that call for sweetness with complexity.
Nose: Vanilla, orange zest, and light caramel. Palate: Sweet and smooth — vanilla cream, citrus, and warm spice over a light brandy base. Finish: Clean and medium-length with lingering vanilla.
