Stagg Jr — and since 2022, simply Stagg — is Buffalo Trace’s annual cask-strength batch expression named for George T. Stagg, the Gilded Age distilling magnate whose Frankfort, Kentucky facility became Buffalo Trace Distillery. Uncut, unfiltered, and bottled at natural barrel proof from barrels aged approximately 8–9 years — the same uncompromising philosophy as the BTAC George T. Stagg, in broader annual batches at significantly greater accessibility. The series launched in 2013 with Batch 1 at 134.4 proof, the highest in the series history, and has released multiple batches annually since. As of 2022, Buffalo Trace removed the “Jr” designation; the product is now released simply as “Stagg” while retaining the same batch-strength philosophy.

The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection George T. Stagg is one of five annual BTAC releases — aged a minimum of 15 years, released once per year in extremely limited allocation, and consistently rated among the finest bourbons produced anywhere in the world. Stagg Jr / Stagg is aged approximately 8–9 years and released in multiple batches per year in meaningfully broader quantities. Both are uncut, unfiltered, and bottled at natural barrel proof, which is the core production philosophy they share. The practical differences: BTAC George T. Stagg has 6–7 more years of barrel aging, which develops a substantially more complex wood-derived profile — dark fruit, leather, dried spice, and a depth that 8–9 year barrels haven’t yet achieved. Stagg Jr’s age range produces a bolder, more grain-forward, higher-rye-spice character with less wood integration. At retail, Stagg Jr is available to a broader audience; BTAC Stagg is among the most allocated bourbons in the country and commands significant secondary market premiums. For collectors building a vertical, both serve different purposes in the lineup. For drinkers who prioritize barrel-proof power and accessibility over peak complexity, Stagg Jr delivers an exceptional experience at a fraction of the BTAC allocation challenge.
Earlier Stagg Jr releases were numbered sequentially — Batch 1 through Batch 13. As the series transitioned to the current higher-volume format, Buffalo Trace shifted to a year-batch code system: 26A, 26B, and 26C denote separate barrel selections within 2026, each released at a different point in the year. Because Stagg is bottled at natural barrel proof without water addition, the proof of each batch is determined entirely by the specific barrels selected — how concentrated they became through evaporation in their specific warehouse positions over the aging period. Historically, batch proofs have ranged from approximately 127 to 134+ proof. Batch 1 (2013) at 134.4 proof remains the series high. The practical implication for buyers is significant: two bottles of Stagg from different batches may differ by 5–6 proof points and taste noticeably different in intensity and character, which is why serious collectors build verticals across batches rather than treating the brand as a single consistent product.
