Sylvano Samaroli was an Italian spirits merchant who began importing Scotch whisky to Italy in the 1960s — at a time when very few independent bottlers existed and the concept of treating single cask whisky as a collectible luxury product was not yet established. Working from Rome, Samaroli became one of the first merchants to identify individual casks from specific distilleries as objects of connoisseurship in their own right, labeling bottles with the distillery name, vintage year, and cask number — information that distilleries themselves rarely published. His selections from Springbank, Bowmore, Laphroaig, and numerous other distilleries during the 1970s and 1980s are now among the most sought-after bottles at auction, often commanding prices that rival or exceed official distillery releases from the same period. Samaroli was particularly adept at identifying casks at distilleries that would later close — making his selections from Port Ellen, Brora, and Caperdonich historically irreplaceable. He died in 2017 but the Samaroli company continues selecting and bottling under his established philosophy.
When a distillery releases its own whisky — a 12 Year, an 18 Year, a core expression — it is typically a blend of many casks selected and combined to produce a consistent, replicable house flavor profile. The objective is consistency across bottles and batches. A single cask independent bottling is the opposite: one specific barrel, bottled entirely as its own release, at the proof the whisky reached naturally without water dilution (or with minimal reduction). Because it comes from a single barrel, every bottle from that release is identical — but no future batch will replicate it. The whisky in an independent bottling reflects the specific conditions of that barrel’s aging: its position in the warehouse, the oak type, the previous contents of the cask, and the vintage conditions of the year it was filled. Independent bottlers like Samaroli add a layer of curation: their selections represent the bottler’s palate and judgment rather than the distillery’s house style, and historically the best independent bottlers have released whisky that surpasses the distillery’s own output from the same period.
