The Romeo y Julieta brand was nationalized by the Cuban government following the 1959 revolution, along with all other major Havana cigar brands. The original owners and master blenders emigrated and eventually established production in the Dominican Republic and Honduras, carrying the brand name under license in markets outside Cuba. This split created two distinct products that share a name: Habanos S.A. produces the Cuban Romeo y Julieta (still made in Havana, including the famous Romeo y Julieta Churchill), while General Cigar produces the Dominican Republic versions available in the US market. The Cuban and Dominican expressions use different tobacco blends and have different flavor profiles — the Cuban is generally earthier and more complex; the Dominican is often more consistent and accessible. The Romeo y Julieta 1875 and Reserva Real in this collection are the Dominican Republic expressions.
The 1875 is the entry and most widely produced Romeo y Julieta line — a medium-bodied blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos with a Connecticut shade wrapper, producing a smooth, approachable smoke with cedar, cream, and light spice. The Reserva Real is a premium tier within the Dominican lineup: aged Dominican long-filler tobaccos wrapped in a silky Ecuadorian Connecticut shade wrapper, producing a fuller-bodied, more complex, and more nuanced smoke than the 1875. The Reserva Real’s aged tobacco contributes more developed cedar, coffee, and subtle sweetness, with a smoother draw and longer finish than the standard line. For experienced cigar smokers who find the 1875 too light, the Reserva Real is the natural upgrade within the same brand family.
