Riazul Tequila is crafted in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico by the Orozco family on land passed down through generations — 100% Blue Weber agave, traditional methods. Range: Silver (crisp, herbal), Reposado (9 months French and American oak, vanilla and caramel), Añejo (2 years French oak, caramel, almond, cinnamon), Extra Añejo (4 years, final year in Oloroso Sherry casks, dried fruit, honey, baking spice).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does using French oak rather than American oak do to Riazul’s Reposado and Añejo?

Most reposado and añejo tequilas use ex-bourbon American white oak barrels — the most abundant and affordable cooperage in the world, which contribute vanilla, coconut, and sweet caramel character to the aging spirit. Riazul uses French oak, which has a tighter grain structure than American oak and releases its flavor compounds more slowly. French oak contributes a different flavor profile: more dried fruit (raisin, dried plum), darker spice, silkier tannin texture, and a subtler complexity than American oak’s more assertive vanilla and coconut character. For tequila specifically — where the agave distillate character is ideally preserved rather than overwhelmed — the more restrained French oak influence allows more of the Highland Blue Weber agave character (herbal, citrus, mineral) to remain present alongside the wood influence, particularly in the Reposado where the aging period is shorter and the agave character more prominent.

What does the Oloroso Sherry cask finish add to the Riazul Extra Añejo?

The Extra Añejo spends three years in French oak followed by a final year in Oloroso Sherry casks — the same finishing approach used in aged Scotch, Irish whiskey, and some premium rum. After three years of French oak integration, the agave distillate has developed significant wood-derived complexity (caramel, almond, cinnamon from the French oak). The Oloroso Sherry cask in the final year adds a layer that French oak cannot produce: dried fruit (raisin, fig, dark cherry), a characteristic nuttiness from Oloroso’s oxidative aging environment, and dark chocolate notes. The four-year total aging with the Sherry finish produces one of the more complex extra añejo expressions in the category — the agave base, the French oak structure, and the Sherry-derived dried fruit and nut character create a profile unlike standard all-American-oak or all-French-oak extra añejos.
