Planteray (rebranded from Plantation Rum in 2022) is a premium Caribbean rum brand blended and finished at Maison Ferrand in Cognac, France. The range spans from accessible mixing rums to barrel-strength single-origin expressions and vintage collector releases — all built on the dual-origin model of Caribbean distillation plus French Cognac barrel finishing.
The lineup includes Original Dark (Jamaica and Barbados blend, plum, banana, and vanilla), OFTD (Old Fashioned Traditional Dark — Barbados, Jamaica, and Guyana pot still rums at 69% ABV, intense coffee, dark chocolate, and spice — bartender’s workhorse for tiki cocktails), Stiggins’ Fancy Pineapple (Victorian-era recipe, real pineapple maceration), Cut & Dry Coconut, Mister Fogg Navy Rum, and the rare Jamaica 1984 40 Year Old.

Maison Ferrand rebranded the Plantation Rum line to Planteray following growing industry discussion about the historical connotations of the word “plantation” in the context of rum — a spirit category with direct historical ties to the Caribbean slave trade. The rebrand was announced in 2022 and reflected the brand’s acknowledgment that the name was inappropriate given rum’s history. The liquid, the production philosophy (dual Caribbean-French aging), and the full expression lineup remained unchanged — the change was purely the brand name. Bottles labeled Plantation Rum and bottles labeled Planteray contain the same spirits; older Plantation-labeled bottles in WC inventory are the same products as their Planteray successors.
OFTD — Old Fashioned Traditional Dark — is a barrel-strength blend of pot still rums from Barbados, Jamaica, and Guyana specifically formulated as a professional bartender tool for tiki cocktails and rum punches. The 69% ABV is intentional: at this proof, a small quantity of OFTD provides enormous flavor concentration in cocktails that would otherwise require significantly more spirit to achieve the same depth. Tiki cocktails specifically — Zombies, Mai Tais, rum punches — call for overproof rum as a float or key component to deliver heat and flavor impact through layers of citrus, orgeat, and liqueur. The Barbados distillate contributes clean sweetness; Jamaica adds the funky ester character (banana, overripe fruit) that defines classic tiki; Guyana’s Demerara rum adds dark molasses depth. OFTD is not designed for neat drinking at full proof.
