Plantation Rum is the most terroir-focused rum brand in the world — a project built by Alexandre Gabriel, owner of Cognac Ferrand, around a simple but radical idea: rum should be treated with the same craft and geographic specificity as great wine or Cognac. Founded in 1997, Plantation sources aged rums from individual Caribbean islands — Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica, Haiti, Guyana, Belize, and others — then ships them to the Cognac Ferrand cellars in France for a second aging period in Cognac barrels. The result is a category of rums with dual origin: Caribbean distillation and aging, French finishing. Wooden Cork ships the full Plantation lineup nationwide.
Every Plantation rum goes through two distinct aging phases. Phase one happens in the country of origin — typically in American oak ex-bourbon barrels at the distillery, for a period appropriate to the rum's style and age statement. Phase two happens in Cognac, France, where the rum is transferred to small French oak barrels previously used to age Cognac. The French oak adds a different set of tannins, spice, and dried fruit notes than American oak, while the residual Cognac adds subtle richness. The time in French oak ranges from several months to a couple of years depending on the expression. No other major rum brand uses this specific process — it's what makes Plantation expressions immediately recognizable to experienced rum drinkers.
Plantation 3 Stars White Rum — A blend of unaged rums from Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad. The three-island blend creates complexity unavailable from a single origin — Barbados contributes clean sugarcane richness, Jamaica adds funky ester character, and Trinidad provides structure. The best cocktail rum in the lineup.
Plantation Original Dark — The entry-level aged expression. A blend of Caribbean rums with the Cognac barrel finish producing caramel, vanilla, and dried fruit notes in an accessible, mixable format.
Plantation Barbados 5 Year — Single-island aged rum from Barbados, aged 5 years in bourbon casks in the Caribbean then finished in Cognac barrels. Classic Barbados character — clean, elegant, vanilla-forward, with the French finishing adding spice and dried fruit.
Plantation XO 20th Anniversary — The flagship expression and the one that made Plantation's reputation. A blend of rums aged 8–20 years in Barbados, finished in Cognac barrels in France. Exceptional complexity — vanilla, coconut, banana, dried tropical fruit, baking spice, and a long finish. Bottled at 40% ABV. One of the most decorated rums in the world.
Plantation Stiggins' Fancy Pineapple — A collaboration with cocktail historian David Wondrich recreating a Victorian-era pineapple rum recipe. Uses two preparations: pineapple rinds infused in white rum, and pineapple flesh macerated in aged dark rum, then blended. Genuinely pineapple-forward without artificial sweetness — tropical fruit, caramel, and spice. An exceptional Daiquiri base.
Plantation Single Cask & Vintage Releases — Individual barrel selections from specific distilleries across the Caribbean. Each release identifies the distillery, vintage year, and cask type — a level of transparency rare in rum. These are collector-level expressions for serious rum enthusiasts.
Plantation Isle of Fiji & Various Single Origins — Country-specific expressions showcasing the distinctive character of rums from less-common origins including Fiji, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Belize.
Plantation Rum is distilled and initially aged in various Caribbean countries (primarily Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Haiti), then shipped to Cognac, France for a second aging period in Cognac barrels at the Cognac Ferrand facility. It's a genuinely dual-origin rum — Caribbean character with French finishing.
Plantation XO delivers vanilla, coconut, ripe banana, dried tropical fruit, cinnamon, and baking spice, with a rich, long finish. The Cognac barrel finishing adds subtle dried fruit and spice that distinguishes it from single-origin aged Barbados rums. It's widely considered one of the best value premium rums available.
Stiggins' Fancy Pineapple Rum is named after Reverend Stiggins, a character from Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers who was known for his love of pineapple rum — a fashionable Victorian-era drink. Plantation and cocktail historian David Wondrich recreated the historical recipe using real pineapple (both rinds and flesh prepared separately) rather than artificial flavoring.
