Marie Brizard was a real person — a Bordeaux woman born in 1714 who, according to the brand’s history, nursed a sick West Indian sailor back to health in 1755 and received in return a secret recipe for anisette liqueur. She commercialized the recipe with her nephew Jean-Baptiste Roger, founding one of the world’s first dedicated liqueur houses. Whether the founding story is literal or embellished, the 1755 date is documented, making Marie Brizard one of the oldest continuously operating liqueur brands in the world. The house built its reputation on natural flavorings at a time when artificial flavoring was becoming common.
Parfait Amour (“perfect love” in French) is one of Marie Brizard’s most recognizable expressions — a violet-colored liqueur flavored with rose petals, vanilla, citrus peel, and sweet spice. It is primarily a bar tool rather than a sipping liqueur: the vivid violet color adds visual drama to cocktails like the Aviation (alongside Luxardo Maraschino), the Purple Haze, and other visually-oriented drinks. The flavor is floral, lightly sweet, and citrus-edged.
