Gran Centenario is one of Mexico’s most decorated premium tequilas, produced at La Perseverancia distillery (NOM 1122) in the Los Altos Highlands of Jalisco by the José Cuervo family. Founded in 1857 and relaunched as Gran Centenario in 1995, the brand is built around a distinctive production technique: the Selección Suave process, in which a small amount of extra-aged Añejo tequila is blended into the younger expressions before bottling — similar in philosophy to the Solera method used in Sherry and Cognac. The result is a house style with exceptional smoothness and complexity at each tier of the lineup.
Gran Centenario Plata — Unaged, enriched with a small amount of extra-aged Añejo via Selección Suave. More complex and rounded than a standard Blanco — fresh agave, citrus, light floral notes, and a smoothness unusual for an unaged tequila. Gran Centenario Reposado — Rested in American white oak, enriched with extra-aged Añejo. Vanilla, honey, gentle oak, and floral Highland agave character. Exceptional value. Gran Centenario Añejo — Aged over 18 months in American white oak with Selección Suave enrichment. Caramel, dried fruit, vanilla, and warm oak. One of the most complex Añejos under $50. Gran Centenario Leyenda Extra Añejo — Aged 5 years in French Limousin oak — the same wood used in premium Cognac production. Dark chocolate, dried apricot, vanilla, toasted almond, and a long elegant finish. The prestige expression. Gran Centenario Rosangel — A Hibiscus-infused tequila, bright pink. The Blanco base infused with hibiscus flowers for a floral, tart, and slightly sweet cocktail expression.

Gran Centenario’s defining production technique: before bottling each expression, the master distiller blends a small percentage of fully matured, extra-aged Añejo (aged 5+ years) into the Plata, Reposado, and Añejo. The older spirit component adds depth, smoothness, and complexity to even the unaged expression — the same philosophy as the Solera system in Sherry production, where older spirit continuously enriches younger batches.
Highland (Los Altos). Produced at La Perseverancia distillery in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco — the same region as Herradura, Cazadores, and Don Julio. Highland agave tends to be sweeter and more fruit-forward than Lowland/Valley agave, which is more herbal and earthy. The Highland character combined with the Selección Suave process produces Gran Centenario’s distinctive smooth, floral, and sweet house style.
The prestige Extra Añejo expression — aged 5 years in French Limousin oak barrels, the same wood used in premium Cognac production. Limousin oak contributes tighter grain and different tannin character than American oak, producing a darker, more complex, and Cognac-adjacent aged tequila profile. Multiple gold and double gold awards at international competitions.
