Elijah Craig Straight Rye & Larceny Small Batch Bourbon Bundle. Heaven Hill Distillery, Bardstown, Kentucky — two bottles from Heaven Hill that demonstrate the grain spectrum in American whiskey: the extra-aged Kentucky straight rye (Elijah Craig Straight Rye) and the wheated small batch bourbon (Larceny) — rye and wheat as the contrasting secondary grains, side by side from the same distillery.

The bundle is built on a single contrast: rye versus wheat as the secondary grain in American whiskey production. Elijah Craig Straight Rye uses 51% rye as the primary grain alongside corn and malted barley, producing the bold pepper, caraway, and dried herb character that rye grain delivers — spiced, assertive, and dry. Larceny Small Batch uses wheat in place of rye as the secondary grain in a bourbon mash bill, producing the soft, rounded, dessert-forward character that wheat creates — bread, butterscotch, and honey rather than pepper and spice.

Tasting the two side by side is one of the clearest demonstrations available of what grain choice does to American whiskey character. Both are Heaven Hill products, both use the same Kentucky rick house aging environment — the grain is what's different, and the flavor difference is unmistakable.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between rye whiskey and wheated bourbon? Rye whiskey uses rye as the primary grain (minimum 51%), producing a bold, spiced, pepper-forward character. Wheated bourbon is a bourbon (51%+ corn) where wheat replaces rye as the secondary grain, producing a softer, rounder, dessert-forward character. Elijah Craig Straight Rye is the former; Larceny is the latter.
  • Why is Elijah Craig Straight Rye called "extra-aged"? It is aged longer than the minimum required for the straight rye designation, allowing more time in new charred American oak to develop integrated spice and oak depth rather than the sharp, less-developed character of minimally aged rye.
  • Is this a good value bundle? At $49.99 for two full-size bottles from Heaven Hill, this is among the best value-per-bottle combinations in the lineup — two genuinely excellent and distinct whiskeys at a price that represents a meaningful saving over buying individually.
