Elijah Craig is named after the Baptist minister credited as one of the first people to age corn whiskey in charred oak barrels — the practice that defines bourbon. Produced at Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, Elijah Craig is the brand that helped establish the Barrel Proof category as a mainstream premium bourbon option, and the Small Batch remains one of the best-reviewed expressions at its price point.
Elijah Craig Small Batch — 94 proof, aged 8–12 years. The flagship and the benchmark for accessible premium bourbon. Rich caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of smoke. Consistently awarded and regularly cited as one of the best bourbons under $40. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof — Released three times per year (batches A, B, and C), uncut and unfiltered at barrel entry proof — typically 120–140 proof. Each batch is unique and collectors track batch numbers for flavor variation. One of the most acclaimed regular barrel proof releases in the industry. Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel — The Small Batch finished in a second toasted (not charred) oak barrel. The extra wood adds vanilla, coconut, and butterscotch notes on top of the standard profile. Elijah Craig 18 Year — Single barrel at 18 years. Extended aging produces exceptional complexity and depth. A benchmark for aged Heaven Hill bourbon. Elijah Craig Rye — A straight rye whiskey applying the Heaven Hill aging expertise to the rye category.

This is subjective and varies by release. The A-batch (released around February) is typically the highest proof. The C-batch (released around October) often has more wood integration from longer aging. The B-batch sits between the two. All three are excellent — the differences are a matter of preference rather than quality.
Heaven Hill blends barrels from multiple warehouses and aging locations for the Small Batch — typically 8–12 year barrels. The “small batch” designation isn’t federally defined, but the program uses genuine age-stated bourbon that would qualify as a premium expression at any distillery. The consistent quality across releases reflects serious attention to the blending process.
Elijah Craig releases three Barrel Proof batches per year labeled A, B, and C followed by a two-digit year (e.g., A124 = first batch of 2024). Each batch draws from a different set of barrels, producing variation in proof, color, and flavor profile. Collectors who prefer higher-proof expressions tend to seek A-batch; those who prefer more oak integration tend to prefer C-batch.
