El Tesoro is one of the most authentic and traditionally produced tequilas available — built around the tahona, an ancient volcanic stone wheel used to crush roasted agave, a process most modern distilleries have abandoned. Produced at La Alteña Distillery (NOM 1139) in the Highlands of Jalisco, founded by Don Felipe Camarena in 1937, El Tesoro remains family-owned and operated — now in the third generation under Master Distiller Carlos Camarena.
After roasting agave in traditional brick ovens (hornos), El Tesoro crushes the cooked agave using a two-ton volcanic stone tahona wheel. The tahona preserves fibrous plant material in contact with the extracted juice during fermentation — yielding a distinctly earthy, complex agave character that mechanical extraction cannot replicate. Very few commercial tequila producers still use the tahona as their primary extraction method.
El Tesoro Blanco — Unaged, direct expression of tahona-crushed agave. Earthy, mineral, roasted agave, citrus, and black pepper. The benchmark for traditional Highland Blanco and one of the finest Margarita bases available. El Tesoro Reposado — Rested 9–11 months in American oak. Preserves tahona agave character while adding vanilla and light caramel. More agave-forward than most Reposados. El Tesoro Añejo — Aged 2–3 years in American oak. Rich and complex: roasted agave, vanilla, caramel, dark fruit, and warm oak, with El Tesoro’s distinctive earthiness present throughout. El Tesoro Extra Añejo — Aged 4–5 years. Deep amber, concentrated, caramelized agave, dried fruit, toffee, and toasted oak. The tahona character persists even at this age statement. El Tesoro Paradiso Extra Añejo — The prestige expression, finished in French Cognac barrels — Hennessy XO casks specifically. Dried fruit, floral complexity, and distinctive richness from the French oak. One of the most celebrated barrel-finish tequilas produced.

El Tesoro uses a tahona — a two-ton volcanic stone wheel — to crush roasted agave, preserving fibrous plant material in contact with juice during fermentation. Combined with third-generation Camarena family production oversight at La Alteña Distillery since 1937, El Tesoro stands apart in the premium tequila category.
El Tesoro consistently earns 92–96 point scores, wins Best in Class awards internationally, and is the house pour of many bartenders who prioritize authentic agave character. Widely considered one of the finest traditionally-produced tequilas in the world.
Distinctively earthy and mineral from tahona production. The Blanco is intensely agave-forward with black pepper and citrus. The Reposado balances agave and oak. The Añejo adds caramel and dark fruit. The Paradiso adds Cognac complexity from Hennessy cask finishing.
El Tesoro’s prestige expression — an Extra Añejo finished in Hennessy XO Cognac barrels, adding dried fruit, floral complexity, and French oak richness. One of the most celebrated barrel-finish tequilas produced.
