Domaine Laroche is one of Chablis’s largest and most influential estates, founded in 1850 in Chablis, owning over 100 hectares across all four tiers of the appellation — Village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru — including parcels in the Les Blanchots Grand Cru and several of the most prestigious Premier Cru lieux-dits. The estate combines traditional Chablis mineral precision with sustainable and biodynamic farming across its holdings.

Chablis sits at the northern extreme of Burgundy, producing Chardonnay from Kimmeridgian limestone soils — a specific marine limestone rich in ancient oyster fossils that gives Chablis its distinctive steely, saline, and mineral character unlike any other Chardonnay in the world. Domaine Laroche ferments and ages primarily in stainless steel to preserve that precise mineral character rather than adding oak influence, with select Premier and Grand Cru parcels seeing limited French oak.

The Domaine Laroche Lineup

Saint Martin Village Chablis — The entry-level expression. Stainless steel fermented, clean and mineral with green apple, lemon, and oyster shell character. The benchmark for accessible Chablis. Premier Cru Chablis — From specific lieux-dits including Fourchaume and Montmains. More concentration and depth than Village, with the Premier Cru mineral intensity showing through extended aging potential. Les Blanchots Grand Cru — The prestige expression from Domaine Laroche’s Grand Cru parcel. Full expression of Chablis’s steely minerality with exceptional depth and 10+ year aging potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Domaine Laroche Chablis distinctive?

Scale and consistency at all four appellation levels, combined with sustainable farming that preserves the Kimmeridgian limestone terroir expression. Stainless steel fermentation across most of the range keeps the mineral precision intact rather than introducing oak influence that would mask Chablis’s defining character. Les Blanchots Grand Cru is among the appellation’s most expressive and long-lived white wines.

How does Chablis differ from other white Burgundy?

Location and soil. Chablis is 100 miles north of the Burgundy Côte d’Or, producing Chardonnay from Kimmeridgian limestone — a fossil-rich marine soil that creates a saline, steely, and oyster-shell mineral character not found in Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet. Most Chablis is aged in stainless steel rather than oak, preserving the pure mineral profile. The result is a fundamentally different style of Chardonnay despite using the same grape and appellation rules.
