Corazón Tequila is produced at San Matias Distillery (NOM 1440) in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco from 100% Blue Weber agave — one of the oldest continuously operating tequila distilleries in Mexico, with roots stretching back to 1886. The core lineup covers Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and Extra Añejo. But the expression that puts Corazón in a category of its own is the Expresiones del Corazón series — a collaboration between Corazón and Buffalo Trace Distillery that produces some of the most genuinely unusual aged tequilas commercially available.
Expresiones del Corazón works like this: Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky empties barrels from its most allocated and sought-after whiskey programs — the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection — and ships those barrels to San Matias in Jalisco. Corazón then fills the emptied barrels with their Highland Jalisco añejo tequila and ages it in the residual whiskey compounds that have soaked into the wood over years of prior maturation. The barrels used include those that previously held George T. Stagg (cask-strength Buffalo Trace bourbon, typically 130+ proof), William Larue Weller (wheated cask-strength bourbon), Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye (cask-strength straight rye), Sazerac 18-Year Rye, and Eagle Rare 17-Year. Each barrel source produces a measurably different tequila — the intense bourbon compounds from a Stagg barrel transfer differently than the spicy rye character of a Handy barrel or the soft wheat notes of a Weller barrel.
This is not a marketing claim. The chemical reality is that used barrels retain extractable compounds from their previous contents — esters, congeners, wood-integrated flavor molecules — that continue to influence subsequent spirits aged in them. BTAC barrels are particularly interesting because the whiskeys they held were themselves extreme expressions: cask strength, long-aged, with concentrated flavor profiles. When Corazón's highland agave distillate ages in a barrel that held 15-year George T. Stagg at 130+ proof, the resulting tequila carries forward flavor complexity from both traditions. The Expresiones series has no real equivalent in the spirits world — no other tequila producer has a direct partnership with the distillery that makes the most allocated bourbon in America.

Expresiones del Corazón is a collaboration between Corazón Tequila and Buffalo Trace Distillery in which Corazón ages their highland añejo tequila in barrels that previously held Buffalo Trace Antique Collection whiskeys — George T. Stagg, William Larue Weller, Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye, Sazerac 18-Year Rye, and Eagle Rare 17-Year. The significance is twofold: first, the BTAC barrel sources are among the most allocated and critically acclaimed whiskeys produced in America, meaning the barrels themselves carry a concentration of flavor compounds from extreme, long-aged spirits. Second, there is no other partnership like it in tequila — no other producer has a direct arrangement with Buffalo Trace to receive emptied BTAC barrels for tequila finishing. The result is a series of añejo tequilas where each expression carries measurable flavor influence from a specific BTAC whiskey, making them genuinely distinct from each other and from any standard tequila aging program.
Each BTAC barrel type transfers different residual compounds into the tequila during finishing. George T. Stagg barrels — from a high-proof Buffalo Trace mash bill bourbon aged up to 15+ years — contribute deep vanilla, dark fruit, and concentrated oak tannin from years of interaction with the wood at high proof. The resulting Expresiones expression is the richest and most bourbon-adjacent. William Larue Weller barrels come from a wheated mash bill cask-strength bourbon, contributing softer vanilla and caramel with less of Stagg's intense tannin. Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye barrels add spice, dried fruit, and the distinctive rye grain character — producing the most complex and savory of the Expresiones expressions. Sazerac 18-Year Rye barrels contribute more restrained, integrated rye character from longer aging. Eagle Rare 17-Year barrels add elegant dried fruit and gentle oak from one of Buffalo Trace's oldest standard expressions. Tasting across the full Expresiones lineup is the closest thing available to experiencing BTAC whiskey flavor through a tequila lens.
Corazón produces their tequila at San Matias Distillery using traditional Highland Jalisco production methods from 100% Blue Weber agave. The Expresiones del Corazón series is produced without additives — the flavor complexity comes entirely from the agave distillate and the barrel finishing in emptied BTAC barrels. The core lineup (Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, Extra Añejo) follows the same 100% agave commitment.
