Blanco tequila — also called silver or plata — is unaged or rested for fewer than 60 days in neutral containers, bottled immediately after distillation to preserve the purest expression of Blue Weber agave. Without oak softening the spirit, blanco showcases the raw character of the agave: citrus, white pepper, fresh herbs, and the clean vegetal sweetness that defines quality tequila. It is the most transparent category — nothing obscures the agave, the water source, or the distiller’s technique.

Blanco is the foundation of every major tequila lineup, from everyday mixing bottles to the most respected additive-free craft expressions. The Highlands of Jalisco (Los Altos) produce blancos with sweeter, more floral agave character from fruit grown at higher altitude; the Lowlands (Valle) produce more herbaceous, earthy, mineral profiles. The same agave variety, region, and production method — tahona crush vs. roller mill, copper pot still vs. stainless column — each leave a distinct fingerprint in unaged blanco that disappears into oak in a reposado or añejo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between blanco, reposado, and añejo tequila?

The difference is entirely aging. Blanco is unaged or rested fewer than 60 days in neutral containers — no oak influence. Reposado is aged 2 to 12 months in oak barrels, producing vanilla, caramel, and light spice over the agave. Añejo is aged 1 to 3 years in oak barrels no larger than 600 liters, producing deeper oak, dried fruit, and chocolate complexity. Extra añejo is aged more than 3 years. Blanco is the baseline — the others are blanco plus time in wood.

What does additive-free mean for blanco tequila?

Mexican tequila regulations permit up to four additives (glycerin, caramel coloring, oak extract, and sugar-based syrup) up to 1% of total volume without requiring disclosure on the label. Most major brands use one or more of these additives to smooth, sweeten, or color their blanco. Additive-free blanco — confirmed by third-party certification programs like Tequila Matchmaker’s Additive Free Project — contains none of them, making the agave and distillation process the only contributors to flavor. Brands like G4, Fortaleza, ArteNOM, Siete Leguas, and Tapatio are widely recognized as additive-free.

Is blanco tequila better for cocktails than reposado?

Blanco is the standard choice for most tequila cocktails — Margaritas, Palomas, Tequila Sodas, and Tommy’s Margaritas — because its clean agave character integrates with citrus and other ingredients without competing oak influence. Reposado works well in cocktails that benefit from light oak structure (Tequila Old Fashioned, Oaxacan Old Fashioned). For any cocktail where agave flavor should lead, blanco is the right choice.
