Amarula is a South African cream liqueur produced from the fruit of the African marula tree — a wild fruit sometimes called the "elephant tree" because of elephants' love of its fermented fallen fruit. Amarula is made by fermenting fresh marula fruit pulp, distilling it, aging the spirit for two years in French oak, then blending it with fresh cream. The result is a rich, creamy, slightly exotic liqueur with notes of caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, and tropical fruit. It's South Africa's most internationally recognized liqueur and a popular alternative to Baileys Irish Cream.
