Laphroaig Islay Single Malt has been produced on the southern shore of Islay since 1815 — the most immediately recognizable whisky in the world with its medicinal, seaweed, iodine, and smoke character from floor-malted barley at approximately 50 PPM phenols. The lineup includes 10 Year (the benchmark, 43% ABV), Quarter Cask (48%, coconut and vanilla from small cask finishing), Lore (richest and most complex, 48%), Select (most approachable), and the annual Cairdeas limited release.

The medicinal, antiseptic character comes from phenolic compounds — primarily guaiacol, cresols, and isoeugenol — produced when Islay peat smoke interacts with malted barley during floor malting. Islay peat is formed from different organic matter than mainland Scottish peat (more seaweed and coastal vegetation rather than heather), giving it a distinct chemical composition that produces the iodine and brine-adjacent phenolic notes absent in Highland or Speyside peated malts. Laphroaig’s approximately 50 PPM target amplifies these compounds to the point where they define the entire flavor profile.
The 10 Year is aged entirely in standard American oak ex-bourbon barrels — the classic, most direct expression of Laphroaig’s coastal peat character at 43% ABV. Quarter Cask finishes in smaller-than-standard barrels (roughly a quarter of a standard hogshead in volume), which dramatically increases the surface-area-to-liquid ratio and accelerates oak extraction. The result is more vanilla and coconut sweetness alongside the peat at 48% ABV, making Quarter Cask more accessible to those who want Laphroaig’s smoke with more wood integration.
