W.L. Weller Bourbon: Every Expression in the Lineup Explained
W.L. Weller bourbon is the most-searched allocated whiskey that most drinkers can actually find at retail — if they know where to look. The reason it generates so much interest is a single well-known fact: W.L. Weller uses the same wheated mashbill as Pappy Van Winkle, produced at the same distillery (Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, Kentucky). Wheat as the secondary grain instead of rye produces a softer, more honeyed character than high-rye bourbons. For drinkers who want that flavor profile without paying Pappy’s secondary market prices, Weller is the most direct path.
Here is every expression in the current Weller lineup, from the most accessible to the hardest to find.
The W.L. Weller Lineup: Expression by Expression
Weller Special Reserve (SR, 90 Proof)
The entry expression and the most widely available Weller. Weller SR carries no age statement — Buffalo Trace does not disclose the minimum age, but the wheated mashbill character is present and approachable at 90 proof. Caramel, light vanilla, and a gentle sweetness make it the most cocktail-friendly Weller. At its retail price, SR is one of the best-value wheated bourbons in the category. It also remains the most findable Weller, though “most findable” is relative — SR is still allocated at many retail accounts.
Weller Antique 107 (OWA, 107 Proof)
Old Weller Antique at 107 proof is the higher-proof NAS expression and the bartender’s choice within the lineup. The extra 17 proof points above SR produce a more assertive spirit that holds up in spirit-forward cocktails — an Old Fashioned or Boulevardier made with OWA benefits from the proof presence in a way SR doesn’t deliver. The higher proof also makes OWA more interesting for neat sipping than SR, where the additional concentration brings out more caramel depth and a longer finish. OWA tends to be slightly easier to find than the aged expressions.
Weller 12 Year (90 Proof)
The most sought-after everyday Weller and the expression that most clearly demonstrates why the wheated mashbill excels with age. Twelve years of barrel contact produces deep caramel, dried apricot, leather, and a complexity that the NAS expressions can’t replicate. At 90 proof, it’s well-balanced for extended sipping. Weller 12 is where the secondary market premium on Weller begins in earnest — retail pricing at most accounts reflects genuine allocation pressure, and secondary market bottles run 3–4x retail. For the drinker who encounters Weller 12 at retail pricing, it is one of the best values in American whiskey.
Weller Full Proof (114 Proof)
Full Proof is bottled at the original barrel entry proof — the same proof at which the whiskey entered the barrel for aging, with no dilution at bottling. At 114 proof, it is the highest-proof standard release in the Weller lineup and one of the most intensely flavored wheated bourbons available. Non-chill filtered, retaining the fatty acids and proteins that contribute texture. Full Proof is a relatively recent addition to the lineup and is widely regarded by serious bourbon drinkers as the best value in the entire Weller range — the combination of proof, quality, and (relative) availability makes it the expression to prioritize when it appears.
Weller C.Y.P.B. (Craft Your Perfect Bourbon, 95 Proof)
A limited release designed to be diluted by the consumer to their preferred proof. CYPB ships at 95 proof with instructions and water recommendations for proofing down to the drinker’s preferred target. It is the most conceptually distinctive Weller expression and the least widely distributed. Availability is unpredictable and quantities are small.
Weller Single Barrel (97 Proof)
The most allocated standard Weller release. Single barrel selection means each bottle comes from one individual barrel rather than a blend, producing more variation between bottles and a more concentrated, barrel-specific character than the blended expressions. Non-chill filtered and bottled at 97 proof. For the drinker who wants the most Pappy-adjacent experience in the Weller lineup without paying BTAC prices, Single Barrel is the closest available proxy. Finding it at retail is difficult; it appears in small quantities through allocated retail channels.
William Larue Weller (BTAC, Barrel Strength)
William Larue Weller is the apex of the lineup and part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection — an annual limited release of five expressions that Buffalo Trace releases each fall through their allocated distribution chain. WLW is barrel strength (proof varies by year, typically 120–140 proof), unfiltered, uncut, and aged significantly longer than the standard Weller lineup. It is the purest expression of what the wheated Buffalo Trace mashbill produces with maximum time and care. For the full story on the BTAC lineup, see our Buffalo Trace Antique Collection guide.
Why Is Weller Hard to Find?
The demand-side explanation is straightforward: the Pappy Van Winkle craze elevated interest in the wheated mashbill dramatically, and Weller is the most accessible product from the same distillery with the same production philosophy. Buffalo Trace’s production capacity for wheated bourbon is finite and cannot be increased quickly — bourbon aging requires time, and the barrels that will become Weller 12 Year were filled twelve years ago. The result is that all Weller expressions are allocated, with the aged expressions receiving the most aggressive allocation pressure.
