Only 151 bottles of a new 1977 vintage within The Macallan Fine & Rare single malt range have been released, priced at US$15,000 each.

New-make spirit was filled into a Sherry hogshead cask number 8661 on 26 September 1977, and has been bottled at 48.5% abv. Only four bottles will be released in the US this year, with a “similar amount expected next year”. The nose is said to have aromas of citrus fruit and lemon zest, sweet apples, vanilla and wood smoke in the background. The palate offers flavours of wood spice, sweet citrus and soft peat, with fruit and oak on the finish. Nick Savage, The Macallan’s master distiller, said: “The full, rich, classic Macallan body holds the supporting characters of sweet apples and vanillas, to give an all-encompassing whisky. “A hint of peat in the background draws inspiration from The Macallan heritage, balanced with maturation in a smaller hogshead cask for a rich, yet delicate experience. “The 1977 Fine & Rare vintage has reached its gentle maturity over the 40 years and represents the classic Macallan style.”
