Sullivans Cove releases first ‘Special Cask’ in a decade
Tasmanian whisky producer Sullivans Cove has launched its first Special Cask expression in a decade, a French oak ex-Chardonnay barrel-matured single cask release.
Special Cask Barrel TD0202 has spent almost 10 years in the 300 litre vessel, with “only a few hundred” bottles produced. The 47.5% abv expression marks the first time Sullivans Cove has released a white wine cask-aged whisky. It is the first release from the distillery since it was sold to a family-owned company led by Adam Sable, the former general manager of Scotch distillery Bladnoch, for an undisclosed sum in December 2016. “When we tasted this cask it was like hitting the jackpot,” said Patrick Maguire, Sullivans Cove head distiller, of the new release. Given nosing and tasting notes include fresh green apple, vanilla, vine flowers, rolled oats, fresh oak, tropical fruits, honey and fresh herbs. According to the brand, Special Casks are released very occasionally. “It might be wine, virgin oak, refill or something else entirely, but if we decide to give it a green label, rest assured you’re getting something really special and rare,” the company said. “Each barrel is unique, producing only a few hundred bottles of exceptional quality.” Sullivans Cove Special Cask Barrel TD0202 is available now, priced at AU$750 (US$560) for a 700ml bottle.
