Speyside’s Benromach distillery to release gin
Single malt Scotch distillery Benromach is preparing to move into a new spirit category with the launch of Red Door Gin.
To date, the Benromach Distillery Company, which is owned by the family behind Scotch whisky bottler Gordon & MacPhail, has exclusively produced single malt. Red Door Gin will be released later this summer following a six-figure sum investment. Work is now underway to refurbish Benromach’s former malt barn and install a new gin still and visitor centre on the site. Forres-based Benromach expects that the new centre will draw an additional 10,000 visitors to the distillery annually. An international marketing campaign for Red Door Gin – named after the distillery’s distinctive red doors – will launch later this year. “Announcing our intention to distil gin is part of our long-term plan to grow our business beyond whisky into new spirit categories,” said Ewen Mackintosh, managing director of Benromach. “We have been closely monitoring the success of the gin market for several years and, with growth predicted to continue, we feel confident that we can bring a unique and exciting new product to spirits drinkers eager for a brand with heritage and authenticity.” At the start of this year, Benromach unveiled plans to expand its whisky warehousing facilities following a 27% sales increase.
