Royal Salute unveils new Polo edition
Blended Scotch whisky brand Royal Salute has released a 21-year-old expression as part of its annual Polo series.
First introduced in 2017 with the World Polo Edition, the collection has included the Estancia Edition in 2021, the Jodhpur Edition in 2023, and the Miami Edition in 2024. Rio de Janeiro Polo Edition, the seventh edition in the Royal Salute's limited collection, celebrates 'the spirit of Rio de Janeiro', paying tribute to Brazil's polo capital. The 21-year-old whisky, created by Sandy Hyslop, master blender of Royal Salute, features American oak-matured whiskies and malts from Braeval Distillery, which have been aged in first-fill casks. The blend displays fruity, floral, and grassy notes, complemented by sweet nuances of vanilla and coconut. Hyslop said: "Coming alive with the creamy sweetness of vanilla and coconut, the fruity notes in this blended malt whisky are like an intricate dance – much like the Bossa Nova performed on a warm Brazilian evening. “To create a blend as special as its inspiration, we have incorporated Braeval whisky, matured in first-fill casks. This has not only allowed us to give it a new dimension, but it also resulted in a taste experience as captivating and multi-layered as Rio itself, a true representation of the city’s irresistible charm.” The limited edition is presented in a vivid green flagon, said to echo Rio's lush green landscapes, accompanied by golden accents as a nod to the Brazilian flag. Malcolm Borwick, world polo ambassador for Royal Salute, commented: “The popularity of polo in Brazil is at an all-time high, which, along with the stunning landscapes and dynamic energy, is somewhere I’ve always really loved to play and spend time.” "The city’s cultural energy is electric, and so it’s a fitting destination to honour within the Royal Salute Polo Collection. I look forward to savouring this new blend after my next polo match there.” The Royal Salute 21-year-old Rio de Janeiro Polo Edition is now available globally in limited quantities at select retailers, with a recommended retail price of US$190. Earlier this year, the Chivas Brothers-owned blended Scotch whisky brand released a special edition Lunar New Year gift pack. In February, Chivas Brothers reported a 2% decline in sales for the first half of the 2025 financial year.
