Mount Gay creates anniversary rum
Rémy Cointreau-owned Mount Gay Rum is marking its 320th birthday this year with the launch of Black Barrel Cask Strength.
The distillery, which claims to be the oldest-running rum distillery, dates production back to 1703. Mount Gay’s limited edition anniversary release is a blend of pot and column still rums matured in American whiskey casks and finished in charred Bourbon casks. “The year is monumental for Mount Gay,” noted Antoine Couvreur, managing director for Mount Gay. “As we celebrate 320 years of heritage and tradition, we also keep our pioneering spirit and have tasked ourselves with being the industry leader in sustainability. "We must give back to the land we use and the people who live on it to ensure its future. This year also honours the expertise of our incredible team with new and limited releases coming out throughout the year. Stay tuned.” Bottled at 66% ABV, it is available at the distillery and the Mount Gay Visitor Centre in Barbados from this month (February). This is the brand’s first distillery-exclusive rum. Following Black Barrel Cask Strength will be the launch of the sixth edition of the Master Blender Collection in June. Mount Gay aims to pay tribute to its ongoing commitment to sustainability, working across five pillars (agriculture and biodiversity; energy; water; carbon footprint; and social responsibility) to preserve the island of Barbados. In July last year, the brand was named as the official sponsor of Cowes Week, a sailing regatta hosted on the Isle of Wight. Plus, in 2021, Maggie Campbell was appointed as Mount Gay's estate rum manager.
