The History of Moët & Chandon

Sep 29, 2026by Wooden Cork

Moët & Chandon is the Champagne that taught the world to celebrate with bubbles. The largest Champagne house of all, it has spent nearly three centuries turning a regional French wine into the global symbol of festivity, royalty, and success. Its story is the story of Champagne's rise itself.

The house was founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, a wine trader in the Champagne region. From the start, the family had a gift for connecting their sparkling wine with prestige and pleasure rather than treating it as just another product.

The Royal Connection

It was Claude's grandson, Jean-Rémy Moët, who truly elevated the house in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A brilliant marketer and host, Jean-Rémy cultivated relationships with European nobility and is famously associated with Napoleon Bonaparte, who is said to have been a friend and patron. That alignment with power and glamour helped cement Champagne, and Moët in particular, as the drink of celebration and status.

The Birth of Moët & Chandon

The name we know today came when Jean-Rémy passed the business to his son Victor Moët and his son-in-law Pierre-Gabriel Chandon, joining the two family names. Under their stewardship and beyond, the house expanded its reach across the globe, becoming a household name on every continent.

Dom Pérignon and Beyond

In the 20th century, Moët & Chandon created Dom Pérignon, its prestige cuvée named for the legendary monk of Hautvillers, which became one of the most coveted Champagnes in the world. The house also produces its widely recognized Impérial line, a fixture of celebrations everywhere. Today Moët is part of the LVMH luxury group, under the Moët Hennessy division.
