Method and Madness adds limited single malt

The experimental arm of Irish Distillers, Method and Madness, has released a seven-year-old whiskey – the first single malt to be created at Midleton’s Micro Distillery.

Method and Madness has released its latest limited edition whiskey, a triple-distilled seven-year-old single malt aged in a combination of first-fill Bourbon barrels and second-fill Sherry casks. “At Midleton, we don’t typically produce single malt, but the Micro Distillery provides us with an unparalleled playground to experiment and play with different ingredients,” said Barrett Stapleton, head distiller at the Micro Distillery. “In creating this expression, the team ventured beyond the realms of the norm at Midleton, unlocking new flavours and the result is a truly unique expression.” The whiskey is bottled at 46% ABV and will be available for €95 (US$103) in select locations, including the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway, France, global travel retail and online. It has lavender and honey on the nose, with notes of citrus zest, dried fruits and hazelnut syrup. The cask treatment was designed to not overpower the distillate.  “This distillation campaign was the very first innovation I experienced when I joined the team as a graduate distiller in 2016,” distiller Henry Donnelly added. “I am incredibly proud to have seen this whiskey develop through distillation, maturation and now its launch as part of the Method and Madness family. I believe this expression will surprise and captivate whiskey enthusiasts the world over as we bring an added touch of innovation into the world of single malts.” The bottle’s design pays homage to the landscape surrounding the grain. Method and Madness launched in February 2017. While there is a single malt finished in French Limousin casks as part of its core range, the 14-year-old whiskey is made at Midleton Distillery. The Micro Distillery opened in 2015. The two single malts have different ages, cask treatments and distillations.
