Islay distillery Laphroaig has released its 2017 Cairdeas Scotch whisky, double-matured and finished in quarter casks.Laphroaig Cairdeas Quarter Cask was initially matured for more than five years in first-fill Bourbon casks, then transferred for a second six-month maturation period in smaller quarter casks. The whisky from 177 casks was then bottled at cask strength, with no added caramel colouring, no chilling and a simple barrier filtration. Tasting notes include aromas of coffee cream, vanilla pods, sweet mint, beach bonfire and sanded wood on the nose, leading to flavours of sweet vanilla, bitter liquorice root and a “throat full of smoke” on the palate. Bottled at 57.2% abv, Laphroaig Cairdeas Quarter Cask is available from select retailers in the US at an RRP of US$79.99. Last year’s Laphroaig Cairdeas expression was finished in Madeira wine casks.
