Hernö creates Ardbeg cask-aged gin

by Melita Kiely

Distributor Love Drinks has brought two new expressions from Swedish brand Hernö to the UK – including a sipping gin aged in ex-Ardbeg whisky casks.

Hernö Sipping Gin #1.3 ex-Ardbeg Casks is said to have aromas of sweet fruits, floral notes and peat, plus a hint of espresso. Tasting notes for the palate include juniper, “heavy” peat, toffee and pear, with a soft, creamy texture. Bottled at 49.1% ABV, it is recommended to be sipped neat over ice. It has an RRP of £87.95 (US$115) per 500ml. The second new expression is Hernö Blackcurrant, which has a lower ABV strength of 28% and an RRP of £40.95 (US$54) per 500ml. The nose is described as offering notes of blackcurrant and a “soft floral sweetness”. This leads to flavours of juniper, fruit and green notes on the palate. It is recommended for mixing in a French 75 cocktail. EU regulations state gin must have a minimum alcoholic strength of 37.5% ABV to be called ‘gin’. Samantha Burke, managing director of Love Drinks, said: “With an incredible reputation around the world for its quality and innovation, Hernö continues to lead the way when it comes to unique craft gins that really capture the imagination of mixologists and consumers alike. “Even in the face of a fierce and competitive category, Hernö goes from strength to strength so we’re excited to bring Jon’s [Hillgren, founder and master distiller] latest creations to the UK.”
