Copper & Kings unveils three brandy-based gins

Kentucky-based Copper & Kings American Brandy Co has unveiled three brandy-based gins: an American Dry Gin and two barrel-aged variants.

Each gin is double-distilled and non-chill-filtered. The gin botanicals are steeped in brandy low-wine during the first distillation, before undergoing a second distillation. American Dry Gin is created using an apple brandy base, said to deliver a gin with ‘juniper power’ and citrus top notes. The American Old Tom expression is created using a grape brandy base, and has been finished in an ex-Bourbon barrel to give “a nice spice”. The 2017 limited edition Copper & Kings L’inspecteur Limited Release Gin was aged for 14 months in an ex-Cognac cask, and is themed upon a cat – a panther named L’inspecteur – in keeping with past releases. Copper & Kings American Dry Gin is bottled at 46% abv and has an RRP of US$35 per 750ml. The American Old Tom Gin variant is bottled at 50% abv and costs US$40 per bottle. Meanwhile the Copper & Kings L’inspecteur Limited Release Gin, also bottled at 50% abv, has an RRP of US$40 per 375ml. Brandon O’Daniel, head distiller, said: “We are a brandy distiller, and there is some uncommon complexity to using brandy as a base, with no neutral spirits and a double-distilled, non-chill-filtered spirit. “How do you elevate the crisp and refreshing expectation of a Dry gin whilst still leveraging the beauty of the rounded mouth feel and long, elegant finish of brandy? “We’ve tried to retain the full fruit essence but within a signature classic Dry gin style. We found the crisper apple brandy base to be most suitable for our American Dry Gin. “We wanted an Old Tom true to the 'black cat' – viscous, slightly sweeter and mellower, just a little savoury versus crisp. Something that could stand up within a cocktail or up to forceful, quality mixer.”
