Compass Box reshapes core lineup
The Compass Box core range now includes Orchard House, The Peat Monster, and new additions Nectarosity and Crimson Casks
Scotch blending house Compass Box has retooled its core line-up of whiskies, introducing two new blends in the process. Nectarosity and Crismon Casks will join pre-existing labels Orchard House and The Peat Monster. Nectarosity blended Scotch was inspired by high-end French bakeries and comes from two main parcels of whisky: grain distilled at Girvan Distillery, and malt distilled at Clynelish Distillery. Compass Box used custom toasted and charred virgin oak casks from Missouri twice in the ageing process, first to house new make grain spirit for a year, and then for new make malt spirit for six to eight years. Additionally, whiskies aged in first-fill Bourbon, custom American oak, and palo-cortado Sherry-seasoned casks were used, giving the whisky notes of vanilla, honey, coconut and caramel. Nectarosity is bottled at 46% ABV and listed at US$65. Crimson Casks blended malt Scotch showcases an intense wine-derived richness and spicy finish. It takes thematic inspiration from the Forest King, who can be seen on the label donning an oak crown, which symbolises the transformative influence of the oloroso Sherry casks used. It is bottled at 46% and listed at US$75. “With this new Core Collection, we bring together the world of whisky at its most compelling,” director of whisky making James Saxon said. “Nectarosity offers a riot of tasting notes, evoking the deliciousness and audacity of high-end patisseries, while Crimson Casks leads with its Sherry-influenced richness and an enticing, spicy finish. Combined with the fragrant, crisp flavours of Orchard House and the sweet smoke of the aromatic and complex Peat Monster, the range satisfies on every level.” Orchard House blended malt harnesses crisp red apple and pear notes. It is bottled at 46% ABV and listed at US$55. The Peat Monster features rich and smoky malts. It is bottled at 46% ABV and listed at US$65. The revamped core range is the latest change in what has been an eventful year for Compass Box. In February, founder John Glaser announced that he would be leaving the company after 23 years, and in March, James Saxon was named whisky making director in his place.
