Captain Morgan debuts ‘sweet and spicy’ rum

Diageo-owned Captain Morgan rum has rolled out a chilli and lime-flavoured expression in the US.

Launched ahead of summer, Captain Morgan Sweet Chili Lime is bottled at 35% ABV and meant to be served as a chilled shot or mixed into cocktails. "With flavour trends heating up, we wanted to create something that defies the rules of traditional rum," Captain Morgan vice-president Anne Nosko said. "Captain Morgan Sweet Chili Lime gives fans exactly what they're craving – the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, and a bold flavour experience with every sip." Alongside the release, the brand has launched a campaign with Canadian actress, writer and producer Amrit Kaur, and American comedian and writer Devon Walker based around the product’s "mouth-blowing” flavours. To further accentuate those flavours, Captain Morgan has also teamed up with snack brand Pretzelized to create a pairing with its sea salt pretzels. The ‘mouth-blowing’ concept is based on the idea that people are drinking basic spirits, and, with warm weather on the horizon, need to shake things up. "When Captain Morgan asked me to team up again, I was all in – and when they asked me to help define mouth-blowing, admittedly I wasn't exactly sure where they were going with all this," said Walker. Kaur, who currently stars in HBO max series The Sex Lives of College Girls, added: “[It was] lots of fun riffing and improvising with Devon, along with shooting ideas with the full cast and crew." The rum is available for US$16 for a 750ml bottle. It is also available in 50ml, 375ml, 1L, and 1.75L formats. The Sweet Chili Lime rum is the latest flavour innovation within the spirits world that has seen the recent addition of a cinnamon-flavoured Tequila and two oat-based liqueurs from Baileys. Captain Morgan's latest release follows the launch of Tequila brand Sierra's Tropical Chilli flavour in April 2023.
