Buffalo Trace unveils $12,500 Eagle Rare 30YO
Sazerac's Buffalo Trace Distillery has released its oldest Bourbon to date: Eagle Rare 30.
The new release marks a 'significant' milestone in Buffalo Trace's exploration of extended maturation. Following the 2023 debut of Eagle Rare 25, which also returns alongside the 30-year-old release, the whiskey represents the second expression aged in the distillery's experimental Warehouse P. The warehouse project is said to demonstrate Buffalo Trace's patience and precision, with the brand aiming to 'reshape expectations of what ultra-aged Bourbon can be'. Harlen Wheatley, master distiller of Buffalo Trace, explained: "Eagle Rare 30 is not simply about time; it is about what time can reveal. Ageing whiskey in Kentucky comes with inherent challenges: evaporation increases and barrel influence intensifies, which can lead to overly dry or astringent characteristics in older Bourbons. "The environment within Warehouse P allows us to manage those effects, softening the extraction and preserving the nuanced flavours that define exceptional ultra-aged Bourbon." According to Wheatley, while barrel ageing plays a crucial role in producing an ultra-aged Bourbon, it's the combination of age and maturity – along with various factors such as the type of oak used, the level of barrel char, and the temperature, humidity, and placement of the barrel – that 'truly enhances the whiskey over time'. "Through careful monitoring over time, we've seen how controlled, extended ageing can bring a whiskey to a point of exceptional smoothness and layered complexity," Wheatley added. "Eagle Rare 30 is a clear expression of that. It is distinctive in a category where nuance is hard-earned." Bottled at 50.5% ABV, Eagle Rare 30 presents aromas of baked cherries, brown sugar, caramel, honey, subtle nuttiness, warm tobacco, and well-integrated oak, all complemented by a hint of smoke. On the palate, it features flavours of sweet aged stone fruit and caramel, accompanied by a gentle smokiness and a refined oak character. The Bourbon is presented in a custom display box and a hand-blown 750ml crystal decanter, surrounded by a hand-hammered, gold-plated eagle's wing and featuring a sculpted glass eagle inside. The total number of bottles has not yet been disclosed. Jake Wenz, president and CEO of Buffalo Trace Distillery and Sazerac, said the new release "represents a new benchmark for American whiskey and affirms Bourbon's place among the world's most exceptional spirits". Eagle Rare 30 will be released in limited quantities through Sazerac's global distributor network of retailers, bars, and restaurants starting in May 2026, with a suggested retail price of US$12,500. Bonhams auction To celebrate the release, Buffalo Trace Distillery has partnered with auctioneer Bonhams on an Eagle Rare-focused auction.
