Blanton's Bourbon: The Complete Guide to Every Expression
Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon changed American whiskey in 1984 when it became the first commercially marketed single-barrel bourbon — each bottle drawn from one individual barrel rather than a blended batch, stamped with the barrel number and rick location where it aged. Nearly forty years later, Blanton's has become one of the most recognized and most allocated bourbon brands in the country. Here is everything you need to know about the full lineup.
The Blanton's Lineup: Every Expression Explained
Blanton's Original Single Barrel (93 Proof)
The baseline expression and the bottle most people mean when they say “Blanton’s.” Produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, from a high-rye mashbill aged in Warehouse H — one of Buffalo Trace’s metal-clad rickhouses known for producing particularly consistent maturation conditions. Each bottle is drawn from a single barrel, barrel-numbered and dated, at 93 proof. The flavor profile is approachable — caramel, vanilla, citrus, and a gentle spice finish — and consistently rated among the best bourbons at its proof level. The signature octagonal bottle and eight rotating horse-and-jockey stopper designs are as recognizable as the whiskey itself.
Blanton's Gold Edition (103 Proof)
Blanton’s Gold was produced for the international export market at 103 proof — ten proof points above the domestic Original. The higher proof produces a more concentrated, richer expression of the same Warehouse H single-barrel character: more intense caramel, deeper dried fruit, and more noticeable heat that integrates well rather than overwhelming. In 2022, Buffalo Trace discontinued Blanton’s Gold for the US domestic retail market. The expression was not discontinued as a product — it continues to be produced and exported internationally, primarily to Japan and Europe. Import bottles of Blanton’s Gold do reach US specialty retailers. Wooden Cork periodically carries Blanton’s Gold import bottles when allocation allows.
Blanton's Straight From The Barrel (SFTB, ~125–132 Proof)
Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel is the cask-strength expression, produced for the Japanese export market and released at barrel proof — typically between 125 and 132 proof depending on the specific barrel, with no water addition after aging. Each bottle is individually numbered from its barrel and dated with the fill date, dump date, and bottling date. SFTB is non-chill filtered, meaning the fatty acids and proteins that contribute mouthfeel and texture are retained. At full proof, it delivers the most concentrated and complex Blanton’s experience available — intense caramel, dark fruit, toasted oak, and a finish that carries for minutes. Adding a few drops of water opens the aroma considerably and is the standard approach for most drinkers. SFTB commands a significant premium over the Original and is allocated even more aggressively.
Blanton's Black Edition (93 Proof)
The Black Edition is produced for the Japanese market and reaches the US in very limited import quantities. At the same 93 proof as the Original, the Black is distinguished by its warehouse and barrel selection — the aging profile differs from the Original’s Warehouse H selection, producing a slightly different flavor emphasis with more emphasis on wood spice and darker fruit notes alongside the familiar caramel and vanilla. Blanton’s Black is the rarest of the standard lineup expressions in the US market.
Blanton's Special Reserve (Red Label, 80 Proof)
The Red Label was originally produced for the European market and is the lowest-proof expression in the lineup at 80 proof. The reduced ABV produces a softer, rounder profile — lighter caramel and vanilla, less heat, more accessible for those who find the Original’s 93 proof too assertive. Availability in the US is extremely limited and erratic. Of all the Blanton’s expressions, the Red Label is the most difficult to source domestically.
The Stopper Collection
Every Blanton’s bottle is sealed with a horse-and-jockey stopper, each depicting one of eight unique poses that collectively spell B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S when arranged in sequence. Collecting all eight stoppers from the Original lineup has become a secondary hobby within the bourbon collecting community. Wooden Cork carries the complete 8-bottle Blanton’s stopper set when available, which includes all eight horse-and-jockey poses in a single purchase.
Blanton's Allocation: Why It's Hard to Find
Blanton’s is allocated by Buffalo Trace through the standard distribution chain: Buffalo Trace distributes to state distributors, who allocate to licensed retail accounts, who may have their own lottery or waitlist systems. Production has not kept pace with the dramatic increase in consumer demand over the past decade. The result is that even the Original — the most widely produced Blanton’s expression — is genuinely scarce at most retail accounts. Secondary market pricing for Blanton’s Single Barrel runs 2–3x retail, which underscores the value of retail pricing when it becomes available.
