April Fool’s anchovy vermouth sells out in 30 minutes
Tinned fish brand Fishwife collaborated with apéritif producer Veso to create a limited edition anchovy-infused vermouth.
Fishwife announced the launch on its Instagram on 1 April, leading many to believe it to be an April Fool’s joke. The brand described it as ‘most savoury, complex, and downright delicious vermouth on the planet”. Many were then surprised by the news on 2 April that the vermouth would be available to purchase from 9am PT the following day. Just 400 bottles were made available, which sold out in 30 minutes. The item’s description on Veso’s website read: “Oh, you thought this was a joke?? We’re in our savoury era, and what’s more savoury than anchovies? “This was a wild idea that we dreamed up, and we brought in our friends at Fishwife for their incredible Cantabrian anchovies from Spain. Those were infused (alongside some carefully chosen botanicals) into this vermouth for one of the most unique flavour profiles you’ve probably ever tasted. The natural umami of the fish can work in a variety of different cocktails, so don’t be afraid to experiment.” Recommended serves include a twist on a Dirty Martini called the Filthy Martini; the Grizzled Mariner, which blends the vermouth with rye whiskey, Campari and sweet vermouth; and the Sea Smoke, made with mezcal, pineapple juice, lime juice and simple syrup. The vermouth was bottled at 18% and retailed for US$41. Veso has also created other savoury vermouths, including varieties made with olive, tomato and miso. Its other apéritifs include Solstice, which is infused with strawberries and citrus; and Nightfall, which offers notes of vanilla, orange, cacao and clove. Last year, we investigated whether it was vermouth’s time to shine. Extra-filthy Martinis were one of our cocktail trends to watch for 2025.
