WhistlePig Rye 10 Year. WhistlePig Farm, Shoreham, Vermont — the flagship expression that launched WhistlePig and defined Vermont as a serious rye whiskey state, a 100% straight rye whiskey aged a full decade and bottled at 100 proof, delivering honey, vanilla, caramel, burnt orange, and a long, creamy, mouth-coating finish that made it one of the most critically acclaimed rye whiskeys in the world at time of release — and still the benchmark against which Vermont rye is measured.

WhistlePig was founded in 2007 when Raj Bhakta purchased a 500-acre dairy farm in the Champlain Valley of Vermont. The founding vision: create the finest rye whiskey in America from a working farm. The first step was sourcing exceptional Canadian rye whiskey distillate — 100% rye mash, already aged — finishing it at the Vermont farm, and bottling it there. Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, who had previously spent 14 years at Maker's Mark, was the architect of the WhistlePig 10 Year's flavor profile. His methodology was rigorous: taste through thousands of barrels to find the rye with the right character, then finish and bottle it to a precise standard.

The result earned a perfect score from F. Paul Pacault's Spirit Journal and a 96-point rating from Wine Enthusiast at a time when rye whiskey was barely registering in the American spirits conversation. WhistlePig 10 Year is credited with helping catalyze the American rye revival — demonstrating that 100% rye mash, aged a full decade, produced a flavor complexity and richness that blended or short-aged ryes could not approach. Bottled at 100 proof, it carries the full character of the aged distillate without dilution softening the rye's natural assertiveness.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Rich and enticing — honey, vanilla, and faint clover with caramel and a subtle herbal rye character. More inviting and complex than the nose of younger or lower-proof rye expressions.
  • Palate: Caramel, burnt orange, and a whisper of smoke with the distinctive rye grain character carrying through. Big, mouth-coating, and full-bodied at 100 proof. The decade of aging creates an integration and roundness that young ryes at any proof cannot replicate.
  • Finish: Long and creamy with a distinctive rye kick that sustains well past the close. One of the most recognized finishes in American rye whiskey.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does WhistlePig 10 Year taste like? Rich honey, vanilla, and clover on the nose. Caramel, burnt orange, and whisper of smoke on the palate — big, mouth-coating, and full-bodied at 100 proof. Long, creamy finish with a distinctive rye kick.
  • Why is WhistlePig 10 Year considered significant? It earned a perfect score from F. Paul Pacault's Spirit Journal and 96 points from Wine Enthusiast at a time when American rye whiskey had almost no critical recognition. The expression helped catalyze the American rye revival by demonstrating what 100% rye mash aged a full decade could produce.
  • What is the WhistlePig farm and why does it matter? A 500-acre working farm in Shoreham, Vermont founded in 2007. WhistlePig's original sourcing and finishing model — sourcing Canadian rye distillate and finishing it at the Vermont farm — created a distinctive production approach that has since evolved toward full grain-to-glass Vermont production. The farm is central to the brand's identity and long-term ambition.
  • How does the 10 Year relate to the rest of the WhistlePig lineup? The 10 Year is the entry point and the standard by which the entire lineup is measured. The Old World 12 Year adds European cask finishing; the 15 Year adds Vermont Estate Oak; the 18 Year Double Malt incorporates farm-malted grain; the Boss Hog series takes individual barrels to extraordinary lengths. All of it begins with the 10 Year as the foundation.
