Marchesi di Barolo is a historic Piedmont estate in Barolo with over 150 years of winemaking tradition, producing classic Barolo DOCG from 100% Nebbiolo — rich cherry, tar, rose, and licorice with firm tannins and age-worthy structure from extended oak aging. Also produces Barbera d’Asti, Dolcetto d’Alba, and Gavi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Nebbiolo the basis for Barolo’s reputation?

Nebbiolo is one of the world’s most demanding and rewarding grape varieties — capable of producing wines with extraordinary complexity and aging potential but unforgiving in its requirements. It ripens late, requiring the longest growing season of any significant Italian variety, and its thin skin produces wines with high tannin and high acidity despite the relatively light color. In the Barolo and Barbaresco zones of Langhe, the combination of calcareous Tortonian and Helvetian marl soils with the variety’s late ripening window produces what many consider Italy’s greatest red wines. The tannin and acidity that make young Barolo austere are precisely what enable it to develop for 20–30 years in bottle.

What is the difference between Barolo Riserva and standard Barolo?

Standard Barolo DOCG requires a minimum of 38 months of aging from harvest, of which at least 18 must be in oak. Barolo Riserva requires a minimum of 62 months total aging. In practice, Marchesi di Barolo and other quality producers age their Riserva wines considerably longer than the minimum — the Riserva designation signals a selection of the best barrels from the best vintages, extended development time, and more complexity than the standard release. The Riserva is intended for longer cellaring and rewards patience.
