‘World’s first’ fresh fig liqueur launches in UK

An Australian drinks entrepreneur has launched the ‘world’s first’ fresh fig liqueur in the UK through a deal with distributor Mangrove.

Created by Patrick Borg, the owner of Think Spirits, Esprit de Figues was inspired by Borg’s move from Malta to Australia in the 60s. Upon arrival in Australia, his mother planted a clipping from her favourite fig tree and, to this day, the tree still produces fruit every year. Borg said: “After seven long years of research, developing and finally delivering this beautiful fresh fig liqueur we are thrilled to announce Esprit de Figues is now available through Mangrove in the UK.” Handcrafted in a 150-year-old family-run distillery in Burgundy, Esprit De Figues encapsulates the "refreshing" flavour of Mediterranean figs by infusing Violette de Bordeaux figs in French beet spirit, the same base spirit used for liqueurs such as Cointreau and St-Germain. Esprit de Figues's flavour profile is described as “fresh fig and raspberry jam with a hint of peach and honey.” The liqueur has been created for drinking over ice but can also be mixed into classic and contemporary cocktails, with suggested servings including an Esprit de Fizz (Esprit de Figues topped with Prosecco) or a Fig Pisco Sours. Esprit de Figues will add to Mangrove UK’s current portfolio, which includes products such as Portobello Road Gin and Herradura Tequila. Nick Gillett, managing director of Mangrove, said: “Esprit de Figues amplifies Mangrove’s liqueur offering with its craftmanship, unyielding quality and luxury. The sumptuous packaging is inviting, accompanied by the liquid’s purity of fresh fig flavour and colour.“ Esprit de Figues is available now from Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange for £25 (US$32).
