Wessex Distillery debuts six new gins
English spirits producer Wessex Distillery has launched a range of six gins in apothecary-style bottles.
The Wessex Distillery has launched its Alfred the Great Gin, Wyvern’s Gin and four flavoured bottlings, including Secret Garden, English Sloe, Rhubarb and Ginger, and Gooseberry and Elderflower. Ahead of the launch, Wessex partnered with design firm Boundless Brand Design to develop a bottle that “would stand out from the cluttered gin shelf and live on in consumers’ homes well beyond finishing the gin itself”. The bottle design features the Wyvern, a two-legged dragon that is the symbol of Wessex, at its heart. The label adorns a brightly-coloured bespoke bottle, which drew its inspiration from ancient apothecary bottles. The neck is shaped as a decanter with a wide opening to hold an oversized cork stopper that is also adorned with the Wyvern icon. Hanging around the neck of each bottle is an exact replica silver penny coin of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, from 871 AD. Hamish Shand, creative director of Boundless Brand Design, said: “The Wessex Gin brief was an ambitious project from the start. The client’s imagination and appetite to create a truly outstanding and memorable brand gave us the scope to create a visual world that is so distinctive to itself, but more crucially within the category. “This particular era often overlooked in history, is full of depth, fantasy, and intrigue, but married with a deep understanding of botanicals, a commitment to quality, and a vision of longevity, Wessex is a real treasure.”
