Slingsby Gooseberry Gin targets wine drinkers

British brand Slingsby Gin has launched a gooseberry-flavoured expression that was inspired by “the fruity tones” of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

The Harrogate-based brand created the expression after co-founders Marcus Black and Mike Carthy travelled to New Zealand in 2017 as part of the brand's sponsorship of the Britain and Ireland Lions rugby team's tour of the country. The pair aimed to create a flavoured gin for the UK that could “capture the unique finish” of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The new gin started out as an experimental bottling available only for customers to sample at the Slingsby store in Harrogate. After positive feedback and more than 5,000 consumer trials, Slingsby Gooseberry Gin was created as a permanent expression. Carthy said: “We pride ourselves in being ahead of the curve when it comes to trends in gin. Just like our Rhubarb Gin, we think Gooseberry will be a huge hit because it offers something a little bit different and we are thrilled to bring it to market. “The feedback we’ve had so far is how the taste is nothing like you imagine a gooseberry gin to be, but in a good way, so we highly recommend trying over ice, with tonic water.” The gooseberry variant uses the same botanical mix and citrus base as the brand’s classic gin, but this time with the addition of fresh locally sourced Yorkshire gooseberries. The gin is said to have “an unmissable tangy sharpness tempered with a sweet and fruity finish”. Slingsby Gooseberry Gin is bottled at 40% abv and is available to purchase from and in the brand’s Harrogate store for £39.99 (US$51). The new expression joins the Slingsby portfolio, which includes a vodka, London Dry gin, navy strength and a rhubarb-flavoured gin.
