Rare Springbank bottling sold via ballot

Cask-to-glass service Caskshare has opened a ballot to allow hopefuls to register to buy one of 135 bottles from a single 30-year-old Springbank cask.

After being put up for sale on the Caskshare website, 15 bottles of the whisky were sold within the hour, leading the company to remove it from public sale and instead offer it for purchase via a ballot. John Robertson, managing director of Caskshare, said: “Springbank is one of the most revered whiskies in the market and one of the most celebrated. They are famous for malting their own barley and you can taste the craftsmanship in this very special 30-year-old whisky. “Caskshare is about sharing really unique cask-strength limited-edition whiskies with our customers and making the ownership of rare and very interesting single malts accessible to everyone. “In setting up this ballot we’re standing by those principles. The response so far has been phenomenal and we’d encourage anyone with an interest in having one of 135 bottles to put their names in the hat now.” The ballot has had ‘several hundred’ applications since it launched. It will close at 9am GMT on Monday 21 November. Each bottle is priced at RRP £1,625 (US$1932). The single malt will be available in April 2023, and will be one of few 30-year-old malts to be bottled next year. The average value of a 30-year-old expression from the Campbeltown distillery has soared to £3,756.30 (US$4467.71) per bottle, according to Whiskybase. The Rare Whisky Apex 1000 index put Springbank in the top 10, also citing it as the brand that showed the most appreciation in the first half of 2021. Earlier this year, a miniature bottle of Springbank 1919 50 Years Old set a new auction record for the brand after selling for £7,360 (US$8,790).
