Indian spirits group Radico Khaitan is aiming to capitalise on Brits’ love of gin with the launch of a new “craft” brand.Launched in the UK last week in celebration of Diwali, Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin will be exclusively available through The Whisky Exchange before rolling out to other retailers across the country ahead of Christmas. It is produced by master distiller Anup Barik using copper pot stills at the Rampur Distillery, based in the foothills of the Himalayas. Of the 11 botanicals used to create the gin, seven come from India, including coriander and vetiver from the north of the country, orange peel from the central region, cubeb pepper berries and lemon grass from the south, Darjeeling green tea leaves from the east and lemon peel from the west. The other imported botanicals include juniper, angelica root, liquorice and caraway seeds. “We’re delighted to be launching our first Indian craft gin and are excited about the heritage behind the brand as well as the Indian craftsmanship our master distiller uses to distil our new gin,” said Sanjeev Banga, president of international business at Radico Khaitan. He added: “Jaisalmer also makes an excellent base for exotic gin cocktails to be enjoyed by consumers especially in the UK, USA, the rest of Europe and other countries worldwide.” Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin has been bottled at 43% abv and has an RRP of £35.45 (US$46). In the 12 months to June 2018, sales of gin in the UK exceeded £2 billion (US$2.6bn) for the first time.
