Père Magloire finishes Calvados in rum casks

French producer Père Magloire has launched a limited edition 10-year-old Calvados finished in Martinique rum casks.

The expression begins with Père Magloire's Calvados XO, which was aged for nine years in French oak barrels at the Normandy-based distillery. For an additional year, the apple brandy was finished in 200-litre American oak ex-agricole rum barrels. These are provided by a Martinique distillery at the base of the Mount Pelée volcano. The finish is said to result in fresh, exotic flavours of Caribbean rum, offering a 'dynamic and refreshing twist' to classic Calvados. Bottled at 45% ABV, the spirit presents aromas of vanilla, cinnamon, and cooked apple, complemented on the palate by notes of cane sugar, caramel, and a blend of sweet and spicy flavours. The expression is part of cellar master Jean-Luc Fossey's continuing experiments to explore new dimensions of the spirit. Drawn from five casks, the 10-year-old non-chill-filtered experimental release is limited to 1,400 bottles. Established in 1821, Père Magloire is one of the oldest Calvados producers. The estate celebrated its 200th anniversary in October 2021. Last week, Père Magloire unveiled two rare cask strength expressions: a nine-year-old and a 15-year-old. Earlier this year,  Calvados producers revealed what’s new for the category.
