New Grove ups sustainability with bio rum
Grays-owned New Grove Distillery has created the ‘first’ Mauritian bio-certified rum as part of its ongoing sustainability focus.
Launched in December 2024, the new rum by New Grove was approved by Ecocert Madagascar under the MU-BIO-154 Agriculture non-EU certification with one year of preparation and traceability that will continue through annual audits. The expression's packaging includes FSC paper and vegetable inks for the label and the box, sourced from a selection of local suppliers, including members of the Made in Moris initiative. A spokesperson for Grays commented: “This new milestone in the history of Grays Inc is not only a step forward for the brand but also for the rum industry in Mauritius. New Grove Bio rum is an expression of a commitment to the future, combining tradition and innovation. We are proud to be the first and to be able to offer our customers a product that respects the environment while offering exceptional quality." The unaged white rum was distilled using a column still and stored in vats for more than 24 months. Displaying a 'natural, powerful and aromatic' character, New Grove Bio rum offers notes of exotic fruit and peppermint on the palate, making it shine in a Daiquiri cocktail. New Grove Distillery was established in 2003 and aims to ‘champion innovation by remaining true to its heritage’. Last December, the distillery hosted a pairing dinner to introduce its rebranded range. Grays previoisly launched two initiatives to improve the sustainability of its Lazy Dodo and Gecko Bay rum brands.
