Moroccan spirit drink lands in UK

Sahara has become the first Moroccan spirit drink to launch in the UK, following three years of research and development.

Inspired by Mahia, a traditional Moroccan fig and aniseed-based spirit drink, Sahara is a contemporary spirit that boasts notes of apricots, almonds, honey and cinnamon. The ancestral spirit has been traditionally prepared by Moroccan Jewish communities for centuries, however since becoming entangled with illegal and information alcohol production in Morocco, it has become rare to find. Omar Oualili, founder at Sahara, said: “As a Moroccan, it is a privilege to create a product that celebrates my heritage and this special Moroccan spirit. Though inspired by Mahia’s original recipe, we’ve adapted Sahara for the British palate by reducing the aniseed flavours and enhancing the fruit notes, all without any added sugar.” The spirit is said to draw upon the core of Morocco's diverse nature, capturing the essence of its people, culture and history. The 40% ABV spirit is described as a contemporary revival with a twist, and a tribute to the resilience of generations past, who have safeguarded the secrets of Mahia, known in Arabic as the 'water of life', through centuries of tradition and heritage. Due to limited alcohol production capabilities in Morocco, Sahara is produced and bottled in Scotland in small batches with organically-sourced ingredients and the mineral water of Royal Deeside in Scotland. Oualili added: “Bringing Sahara to life as a solo founder has been challenging, but the positive feedback from our first customers has been incredibly rewarding. I am excited to continue promoting Sahara as a brand and bringing a unique drinking experience to the UK.” Following the launch hosted at boutique London hotel, Franklin, this summer, the product is exclusively available in the UK through drinksahara.com, at a retail price of £42 (US$55) per 500ml bottle. The Moroccan Gold, a North African twist to the Negroni made with Sahara and garnished with a 24K gold leaf, will be available at Franklin throughout this year’s London Cocktail Week festival, taking place from 3-13 October.
