Milroy’s marks 60 years with heavily peated whisky
Independent retailer and bottler Milroy’s has released Heavily Peated 13 Year Old, its first continuously released bottling, to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
The business was founded in 1964 by John ‘Jack’ Milroy with the help of his brother, Wallace. Milroy’s Heavily Peated 13 Year Old was distilled at island distillery Jura and aged for 13 years. The expression was finished in first-fill Jamaican rum casks, sourced from Monymusk Distillery in Jamaica, and has notes of ‘tropical fruit funk’ and ‘complex smoke’. It is bottled at 48% ABV and retails for £59.95 (US$78). Milroy’s will also host a series of three tasting events to ‘celebrate its past, present and future’, at its recently refurbished and rebranded whisky bar in London’s Soho, 3 Greek Street. Each event opens with a cocktail using the new Heavily Peated expression. The first event on 14 November will focus on Ben Nevis Distillery, which will be followed by a Vintage Reserve tasting on 19 November. This collection comprises ‘well-aged malts that showcase classic whisky-making techniques’. The final event, on 26 November, will give an exclusive look at unreleased cask samples destined for future bottlings. “Milroy’s is a much-loved whisky institution, and London’s original whisky specialist,” said CEO Jolyon Dunn. “Over the past six decades, the business has become known as a world-leading purveyor of whiskies and other fine spirits. We’re committed to sourcing and sharing these remarkable bottlings, and releasing Heavily Peated, with its remarkable production story and fascinating flavour profile, is a fitting way to celebrate this milestone. “We’re also delighted to welcome Milroy’s friends and customers to our 3 Greek Street partner bar to taste some of our most renowned bottlings from the past. As well as sharing these remarkable whiskies, we’re also excited to share samples from upcoming bottlings as we look ahead, too. “It is an honour to lead Milroy’s as it marks 60 years, and I’m thrilled for what the future holds for us as an independent whisky merchant and bottler.”
