Mijenta brings Añejo Gran Reserva to UK
Tequila brand Mijenta has released its ultra-premium añejo expression in the UK, retailing for £159.50 (US$201).
The añejo originally launched in the US last year to a limited release of 2,160 bottles. The liquid itself went through an 18-month ageing process in four different hand-selected casks. Co-founder Mike Dolan said: “We’re thrilled that the first batch of our añejo released in the US last year was a favourite among an ardent community of Tequila lovers, and we’re excited to share it now with consumers in the UK. “We believe our añejo is unlike anything else on the market and reflects the incredible care and intention that we put into every aspect of the brand." The expression uses the brand's blanco as a base and its combination of casks starts with American white oak and French oak barrels, then into acacia barrels which add light notes of herbs and citrus, and lastly Sherry casks for the final two months, which bring out fruity notes. For the full scope of the añejo’s notes, the nose features cacao, butterscotch and tobacco, while the palate sees spices of mace, anise and saffron, as well as dried stone fruits. Vanilla and a hint of coffee can also be found. The Mijenta Añejo Gran Reserva Tequila’s packaging was designed by the brand's co-founder Elise Som (also the brand's director of sustainability), who drew from the midnight blue sky in the Arandas Highlands and the the Centzon Totochtin folk story, for her inspiration. All paper-related components (label and box) are made of agave waste. The expression has an ABV of 40% and can be purchased from Harvey Nichols, Berry Bros & Rudd and Master of Malt. Priding itself on being a ‘sustainable artisanal’ Tequila, Mijenta was the first in the category to receive B Corp certification. This year, it was listed as one of alcohol delivery service Drizly's top 10 fastest-growing Tequila brands.
