Mezcales de Leyenda intros two expressions
Mexican-owned mezcal brand Mezcales de Leyenda has released two new single-state variants, made from agave grown exclusively in Puebla and San Luis Potosí.
The two new expressions join the brand’s single-state line-up of Oaxaca, Durango and Guerrero expressions. Each mezcal is produced using traditional, sustainable methods specific to each region, from harvest to distillation, said to maintain the “craftsmanship of true mezcal”. Puebla is produced from agave poatorium, or ‘Tobala’, and is said to be one of just two mezcals produced in the state. The agaves are cooked in a lava rock-lined put for four days, before being fermented in open-air oak vats and double distilled in a copper alembic still. The Puebla mezcal is said to offer herbaceous aromas with some peat-like smoke, and notes of caramel, citrus and apple peel on the palate. San Luis Potosí is made from salmiana agave grown in the rocky central Mexican plateau. Cooking takes place in clay ovens for two days and fermentation in natural vats for four days, before the liquid is copper distilled. Given nosing and tasting notes include herbal, bell peppers, jalapenos, mineral hues and a gentle smoke. “As a Mezcal that was founded in Mexico and is also owned by Mexicans, we feel tremendous pride that we are able to pay homage to our rich heritage by sharing and highlighting these expressions from different regions,” said Danny Mena, co-founder of Mezcales de Leyenda. Puebla and San Luis Potosí are available in limited quantities now at suggested retail prices of US$84.99 and $79.99 respectively.
