Method and Madness debuts Garryana Oak Edition

by Alice Brooker

Irish Distillers-owned Method and Madness has released a new Irish whiskey finished in Quercus Garryana white oak casks – a first for the category.

Created by the microdistillery team and wood innovation specialists in Midleton, Cork, the Irish whiskey has been triple distilled from a mashbill of malted and unmalted barley, which was originally matured in ex-Bourbon American oak casks. The liquid is said to be a ‘world first’ in its category, having been finished in casks made from virgin Quercus Garryana, a species of white oak native to the Pacific Northwest, for between four and 12 months. Finbarr Curran, maturation lead at Midleton Distillery, said: "Method and Madness Garryana Oak is an expression aligned with the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of Irish whiskey. The microdistillery has always been about experimentation and the use of Garryana oak is just the latest example of our innovative spirit and dedication to producing unique and exceptional whiskeys." Garryana Oak is considered rare and distinctive for its tough and dense wood properties, and brings a ‘unique richness, complexity, and spiciness’ to whiskey. The liquid presents aromas of smoked applewood, treacle, and golden raisins, with notes of black pepper, coffee cake, clove spice and malted barley. Mairead Callanan, wood maturation technologist, added: “The Garryana oak barrels have added a unique dimension to the traditional single pot still whiskey, offering a distinct flavour profile and a taste of the Pacific Northwest's terroir.” Method and Madness Garryana Oak is available from today (19 May) in Ireland, the UK, global travel retail and online, followed by a US launch in late 2023. It retails for RRP €95 (US$102.50). Last year, the brand released a limited edition whiskey made using Irish oats and malt.
