Isle of Barra Distillers intros Barra Atlantic Gin

Independent Scottish producer Isle of Barra Distillers has launched its inaugural spirit, Barra Atlantic Gin – featuring locally-harvested carrageen as a key botanical.

Located on the Outer Hebridean island, Isle of Barra Distillers was established back in 2016 by husband and wife duo Michael and Katie Morrison. The company has partnered with an unnamed London distillery to produce the first batch of Barra Atlantic Gin, as it takes steps to establish the island's first distillery. Carrageen, also known by its scientific name Chondrus Crispus, is a species of red algae native to the Atlantic Ocean. It is harvested after the spring tides, when the water is furthest from the shore, and is said to be "exceptionally rich in nutrients and antioxidants". "Above everything else that we can achieve from this journey, it is the thought of both giving something back to this beautiful island and also putting the Isle of Barra on the ‘gin map’ that drives us forward," said Michael. "We feel we owe it to the island and its people – we have opportunity to do something great and something great is what we are going to do."
